Augmented Reality Dinosaurs Take Over Royal Ontario Museum

MeldMedia approached us with an innovative exhibit for the Royal Ontario Musem. At "Ultimate Dinosaurs: Giants From Gondwana", MeldMedia has created up-close-and-personal interaction with the extinct creatures via Augmented Reality iPad apps.

On our side, we had to come up with a way to recreate the growls, roars, and resounding footsteps and movements for the dinosuars, which of course required a lot of imagination. Our Foley Artists figured today's crocodile would be a good starting point as reference for the dinosaurs. But far more fierce. They then experiemented with everything from manipulating their own voices, to squishing vegetables, to synthesizing various animal growls. Using a technique similar to old school tape-manipulation, the sounds were recorded at high sample rates and then slowed down to create extra large, fierce sounds.
In addition to the dinosaur audio, we worked on the Interactive Experience "Continent Puzzle", where users reunite the continents of prehistoric Earth on a large projection using individual iPads. For this we used natural Foley materials, such as soils, earth, and water.
